Gangotri is set amidst high cedar forests and Bhagirathi river views. The shrine is accessible by road from Uttarkashi. Pilgrims take holy dips in the freezing waters of the Ganga river. The actual geographical source of the river, Gaumukh Glacier, is a 19km trek further up inside the Gangotri National Park.
